Every year, in the Khumbu region of Nepal, this Buddhist Dance Drama is enacted by the monks of Tengboche Monastery. The site of this high altitude entertainment is the temple, or gompa, within the monastery itself. Situated on a generous plateau at an altitude of almost four thousand metres, the gompa is crowned by some of the highest mountains in the world. From all over Everest region people gather for their holy festive ceremony which is very important for Buddhists religious society to receive holy blessing from the meditated monks for ever for good life.
The Mani Rimdu Festival is a colorful, noisy occasion that takes place in the most spectacular of settings. Performed by the monks of Chiwong and Tengboche monasteries, it depicts the victory of Buddhism over the ancient 'Bon' religion. The monks, with elaborate masks and costumes on, perform a series of ritualistic dances of the triumph of Buddhism over Bon, the ancient animistic religion of Tibet.
