Island Peak Climb

Island peak is one of the most popular trekking peaks in Nepal. It was first named Island Peak in 1952 because of its resemblance to an island in a sea of ice when seen from above Dingboche. As well as providing an enjoyable climb the peak also provides some of the most striking scenery in the Khumbu.

The summit is interesting and attractive with a highly glaciated west face rising from the Lhotse Glacier. The ridge rising to the south from this point leads to the summit of Island Peak. The extension of this ridge descending southwest is the part of the normal route of ascent and leads to the south Summit. From base camp, we will ascend a steep, grassy slope and small rocky steps to high camp. It is necessary to climb a steep, exposed snow and ice ramp to the summit ridge; fixed ropes will be used where necessary increasing your chances of safely reaching the summit. We will negotiate a final snow pitch before reaching the summit.

Many other peaks can be seen from the summit including Nuptse (7,879m), Lhotse (8,501m), Lhotse Middle Peak (8,410m) and Lhotse Shar (8,383m) in the north, Makalu (8475m) in the east, Baruntse and Amadablam in the south.
