East India & Bhutan Tour

Places to visit: Kolkata – Bagdogra – Darjeeling – Gangtok – Kalimpong –Phuntsholing – Thimpu - Paro – Delhi

 

Day 01: Arrive Kolkata
On your arrival at international airport, transfer to your hotel for overnight stay.
The city was established in 1686 when British moved to the small villages of Sutanati, Govindpur, and Kalikata from their trading port of Hooghly. The city got its name from the last of the settlements mentioned above. The city progressed well until 1756 when Siraj-Ud-Daula (Nawab of Bengal) attacked the town and drove away the British. Lord Clive retook Calcutta- Kolkata and until 1911, Calcutta- Kolkata remained the capital of the British government in India. Being the center of power for so long created a unique culture and heritage of the city, totally unlike any other city of India. Calcutta is today a sprawling city of strange contrasts.  Palatial houses, huge monuments, a center of active politics, film and theatre, culture and art, the city offers another picture of herself in its hustle-bustle, over crowdedness, noisy streets and narrow lanes. 

Day 02:  Kolkata - New Jalpaiguri
Morning proceed for city sightseeing of Kolkata
Visit Indian Museum - Established long back in 1814 in the Asiatic Society Building was founded by Dr. Nathaniel Wallich, a botanist from Denmark. It is one of the earliest museums established in the world and considered the largest and best museum in the country. In 1875, it was shifted to the new building in Italian architectural style designed by Walter B Grawille, Kali Ghat - Kalighat is located in the city of Calcutta on the banks of the river Hooghly (Bhagirathi). The Kalighat temple in its present form iis only about 200 years old, although it has been referred to in Mansar Bhasan composed in the 15th century, and in Kavi Kankan Chandi of the 17th century. St.Paul Church & Victoria memorial - Victoria Memorial has been built in a sprawling 26 hectares of land and a visit to Victoria Memorial is the best education one can possibly have of the British East India Company's rule in India. Here you will come face to face with miniature paintings and images of Queen Mary, King George V and Queen Victoria. What is more, you will be mesmerized by the three thousand five hundred articles associated with the everlasting memory of Queen Victoria.
In time transfer to railway station to board train for New Jalpaiguri.
Stay overnight at train.


Day 03: Arrive New Jalpaiguri – Darjeeling (90 Kms /03 Hrs)
On arrival at New Jalpiguri railway station, met and proceed for Darjeeling by surface and on arrival Darjeeling and check-in into the hotel.
The cool climate of Darjeeling provides a delightfully different experience from most other parts of India. The town nestled in the lap of the mighty Kanchenjunga and it is a mixture of old colonial charm, bustling bazaars and the lush tea gardens, to the beautiful natural scenic views and a wide variety of activities, lush tea gardens, terraced farms and a slower pace of life.

The rest of the day is at leisure.  Stay overnight at hotel.

Day 04: Darjeeling

Full day take the tour of Darjeeling.

Early morning you will drive to Tiger Hill to witness the sunrise over the fabulous views of the famous Mt. Kanchendzonga (28,208 ft) (subject to clear weather conditions). On way back to the hotel visit Ghoom Monastery a Tibetan Buddhist monastery.
Afternoon, proceed on a sightseeing tour of Darjeeling.

Enjoy a tour of the various tea estates and visit the local monasteries and the flower nurseries.  
Stay overnight at hotel. 

Day 05: Darjeeling

Full day you are free for independent activities or optional you can enjoy the toy train visit.

The trip from new Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling by the 'Toy Train' is a memorable experience. Among the places of interest are observatory hill an excellent place for a view of Kanchenjunga and Himalayas, Ghoom Monastery, Alcobar Monastery, Himalaya Mountaineering Institute, Zoological Park, Tiger Hill and Llyod botanical gardens.

Day 06: Darjeeling – Gangtok
Morning drive to Gangtok and on arrival check-in into hotel,

Gangtok means ‘Hilltop’, one, which was made flat in 1716 to build the Gangtok Monastery, is situated in the lower Himalayas & was a small hamlet until the construction of the Enchey Monastery in 1840 made it a pilgrimage center. It became a major stopover between Tibet & British India at the end of the 19th century.  It is also a centre of Tibetan Buddhist culture & learning with numerous monasteries & religious educational.

The rest of the day is at leisure. Stay overnight at hotel.

Day 07: Gangtok
Morning proceed on a city tour of Gangtok

Visiting to Research Institute Of Tibetology -a library with a large collection of documents and rare books on Buddhism and an attached museum with a rare collection of antiques, coins and Tibetan Paintings, Orchid Sanctuary with over 200 species of orchids amidst beautiful landscape. and Rumtek Monstery – an exact replica of the monastery at Tsurphu in Tibet.  Afternoon city tour covers Tsuklakhang, Royal Chapel of the Chogyals.

Day 08: Gangtok - Kalimpong
Later dive to Kalimpong on arrival check in at hotel for overnight stay.

Kalimpong is a unique extravaganza typical to rural regions, a cultural experience you will never forget. , the picturesque town of Kalimpong is definitely a place to visit in this region. Once a part of Sikkim, this town is was an important centre for trade and commerce for Tibetans from the north and the headquarters of the Governor of Bhutan. If you like going for long walks, this is where you should head for. The temperate climate and sylvan surroundings makes it an ideal place for spending a restful weekend.  

Afternoon you will walk down to the “Haat Bazaar” or local market – a place where villagers from all nearby villages come & sell/display their wares (right from handicrafts to food items).

Day 09: Kalimpong – Phuntsholing (185 Kms / 06 Hrs)
Depart Kalimpong for Phuntsholing the frontier town of Bhutan is a fascinating mixture of intermingling of Bhutanese, Indian, Nepalese culture and on arrival check-in into the hotel.

Evening you will take a stroll around Phuntsholing town and visit Zangtho Pelri Lhakhang, the temple situated in the city center.

Day 10: Phuntsholing – Thimpu (176 Kms / 06 Hrs)
Depart Phuentsholing for Thimphu, This drive is very pleasant with numerous scenic spots en route visit to Kharbandi Gompa.

Kharbandi Gompa the beautiful monastery situated in garden of tropical plants and flowers built in 1967 by Royal Grand mother. Further ahead visit Kamji monastery.

Thimphu is the Capital to the tiny Himalayan kingdom Bhutan. Thimphu is a gallery of traditional Bhutanese art, architecture, culture, and tradition and above all still so ethnic and pure. Full of wonderful Hand woven textiles, woodcarving, and tailor made clothing, jewelry. And it is said that Thimphu is the only world capital without traffic lights. 

Later continue drive for Thimpu and on arrival Thimpu check-in into the hotel.

Evening you will be free to take a visit to handicrafts Emporium, to see the exquisite artistry of traditional crafts and textiles.

Day 11: Thimpu - Paro (65 Kms/02 Hrs)
Morning visit to the National Memorial Chorten which hosts a vast collection of ancient Buddhist National Institute for Zorig Chumsu is commonly known as 'the painting school and Dechenchholing valley and witness the gold and silver smiths at work.

Afternoon proceed for Paro by surface and on arrival check-in into the hotel

Rest of day you are free for independent activities. Stay overnight at hotel.
Paro one of Bhutan's most impressive and well-known dzongs, and the finest example of Bhutanese architecture. The inward-sloping walls form a massive structure that towers over the town and is visible as a great white monolith from vantage points throughout the valley.

Day 12: In Paro
Full day we take city tour of Paro.

Visiting of the Drukgley Dzong and on a clear day the 24,000 ft. white domed peak of sacred Chomolhari (Mt. of Goddess) looms overhead. A visit to the National Museum housed in an ancient watch tower, which has a fine collection of Thangkha, textiles, weapons, and artefacts-short walk to Paro Rimpung Dzong.

Day 13: Paro - Delhi 
In time transfer to airport to board flight for Delhi and on arrival at International airport, you will be met and transferred to hotel.
Delhi, India’s modern capital is also an ancient city tracing its origins in legend.  It is dotted with hundreds of landmarks and offers more than a millennium of history in stone.  From here various Hindu and Muslim dynasties including the Mughals ruled India. When British administration moved to Delhi and New Delhi became the Capital of India once again.
Rest of day you will be free for visit local animated market.
Stay overnight at hotel.

Day 14: Delhi
Full day take the tour of New Delhi & Old Delhi.
Morning proceed for sightseeing of New Delhi, Visit Qutub Minar, One of the fine examples of early afghan architecture, Humayun Tomb, built by the wife of Humayun, Haji Begum in the mid 16th century, this red sand stone structure is considered to be the predecessor of Taj Mahal.  Drive pass by India Gate (A War memorial) and Presidency House.
Afternoon proceed for sightseeing of Old Delhi, include the drive past to Red Fort, visit to Jama Masjid, Commissioned by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan and completed in the year 1656 AD, it is one of the largest and best-known mosques, and later enjoy cycle rickshaw ride within Chandani Chowk market.

Stay overnight at hotel.

Day 15: Delhi Depart
In time you will transfer to international airport to connect flight for onward journey.
